Chapter Ten
The water-gathering was much less romantic than I might have hoped. Musir’s conservative influence and general distrust of Blue’s intentions with me meant that walking inland to the waterfall and pool and then filling the water bottles were the only things we did together. We took turns bathing after filling the water bottles.
I went first once the guys were far into the jungle and out of view. I dipped into the cool water determined to enjoy the time alone to get clean and stretch my body. I was weightless and swimming but couldn’t get over the thought that they might be watching me. When I was certain they weren’t, the thought they were pacing impatiently out in the jungle was enough to rush me.
Someday I’m going to come here alone, all alone, I thought as I emerged from the pool sooner than I liked, no matter who wants to come along. Then I’ll swim for hours and dry off in the sun before I have to put on this stupid dress again.
The guys took their turn once I was dressed and modest in my tattered skirt and Blue’s undershirt, sticky against my wet skin. Musir stood on the edge and watched me leave. He waited until I was out of view before he undressed. Blue was already stripped and dove in. I couldn’t see him past Musir but I saw the clothes flung on the shore and heard the light splash of a perfect dive.
I didn’t wander nearly as deep into the forest as the guys did, though I fought the entire time with my desire to spy. I hadn’t seen a naked man before, other than in my sex-ed book at school. There were two fine specimens just yards away.
I restrained myself and settled instead for listening closely. I heard movement in the water and discussions alternately in English and Arabic. Most of what I could make out was purely utilitarian. They weren’t chatting away but instead just focusing on tangible conversation as necessary.
“Ana jae.” Musir’s voice floated up from the pool down in the rocks.
“Me too. How long is it since we’ve eaten? We were so excited about getting water that besides some fruit and bits of edible plants here and there, we haven’t done much true gathering; not on our walk today or any of our explorations before. Don’t you feel like all we do is get enough for whatever mealtime it is? Yeah, I’m hungry too, man,” Blue said.
My stomach grumbled. I was much hungrier than I realized. The adrenaline of survival was a real appetite suppressant. I continued to listen as I examined the plants at the edge of the forest.
“We will fish when we get back to the beach,” Musir said.
“You really think Kent’s gonna get those sticks sharpened?”
“Na’am. Why would he not? He must be hungry too. Hunger must triumph over laziness.”
“He is really lazy.” Blue laughed.
“It seems to me he thinks he is proficient at fishing. Tasked with something he knows how to do, he will wish to show this talent.
